On Visiting Museums
How to visit museum might seem like an odd instruction — you just go, right? Sure, just walk in and start looking around…
Recently, I visited the Museum of Fine Arts in Montreal. Big Museum. Lots of pavillions, huge permanent collection, always special events going on — a busy, busy place.
If you are not there to view a particular exhibit, entering these large museums can feel a little intimidating. At least, the experience induces the question, ‘Why am I here?, What am I supposed to look at?”
My advice is to just wander for a few minutes. Let the atmosphere settle with you. This is not a movie where the experience is handed to you, you have to let it develop. While wandering about, something will catch your eye. Sit down and look and realize, “Oh, right, this is why I am here — to look at beautiful things.”
