Deadlines –Why We Love Them

Parkinson's LawParkinson’s “Law of Expanding Work” states,

“Work expands so as to fill the time available for its completion”.

So true.  Give someone two hours to complete a 20 minute task and chances are very good the work will be finished in two hours.

The opposite also true– 2 hours of work can be completed in 20 minutes if that’s all the time allotted.  (Or remaining).  Most of us have had homework assignments where we were given two weeks or more until the due date… and completed it in the last two days. (Or less.)

Why do we do this? Why take more time than necessary to complete a task, or, why leave a task that should require more time to the last minute?  I can’t speak for anyone else but me, but I think the answer lies in the motivating forces of a deadline.

A deadline!  Best motivator ever –A flight is a deadline;  getting dinner on the table for guests is a deadline; losing pounds before summer — and whatever other deadlines you can create for yourself personally or professionally.

Deadlines exist everywhere– seek them out anytime you need a little motivation to get something done.

This week pages are the opening scene to Chapter Five, “Oops, Wrong Box”.  Uploaded only slightly past the deadline at www.contentmentisforcows.com
