There is Magic in Baseball

Ted-Williams“Athleticism is the ability to think of nothing when you need to.”  This is apparently a Ted Williams quote, although my Google search skills could not confirm that.

If you’ve ever played a sport, you might recognize the wisdom in this quote.  There is that moment when you are at bat, for example, and you see that perfect pitch, you prepare to swing… and then your brain gets involved with a thought… “Oh, I am really going to hit this one…” And you swing and miss.

But there is another moment when you see that perfect pitch and all thought seems to be suspended and you swing, connect, and your hit is a thing of beauty.

That’s magic.

I think we can all experience magic.  No matter whether it occurs while we are writing, cooking, painting, playing music, or whatever… If you can experience ‘thinking of nothing’ in the moment that you need to, magic is created.
