The Danger in Routines

A change in routine.

A change in routine.

There is inherent value in routines.  They are useful tools to help us organize ourselves and our days.  But, by their very nature, there is also a danger embedded in routines.  A routine becomes, well, routine.  The habit and motions are so familiar we start to take them for granted.  We drive home and can’t remember making the left turn at the busy intersection.  Our ‘autopilot’ takes over and we just assume all is well –all is routine.

There is the danger.  In that moment when a task becomes routine, it renders us vulnerable to error.

When I first learned how to ‘edit code’ in order to be able to manage my comics website by myself I was intimidated by the task.  It seemed so complicated.  So mysterious.  So out of my routine.

Fast forward a few months, and the weekly task has become so routine I discovered I had made an error.  Not a big deal, but it made me realize how far I had come from those first few panic filled code editing experiences when I would check, re-check, and one more check just to be sure.

Now, meh.  So I edited code this morning –just part of the weekly routine.

The trick is to make the double check part of the routine…
