Good Enough

CH2_SC7_PG7Is being a perfectionist a virtue?  I don’t think so.

It is one thing to work at a project or task to the best of your abilities. It is another thing to obsess or have anxiety over minute details.  At some point a creator has to look at a project, and say “There, it is done”.  Me, I say “Good Enough.”

Although I have been known to use a Q-Tip to get the paint behind a doorway just right, no one would ever call me a perfectionist.  I like to joke that I am like my hair – a well-managed, well maintained mess.  When it comes to creating these pages, there are a lot of steps that require a balance between perfectionism and letting it go.

I want to get the art ‘just right’.  I want the finished image to look like the image I have in my head… which never happens.  I can only erase and try again so many times before I have to say, “Good Enough” and consider it done.  Imperfections are included in the same way as when you buy a leather product and the tag says, ‘variations are a natural occurrence’.

One thing I can say is that for each and every page of these comics, the art was the best that my abilities could produce on that day.  And being able to say that is as perfectionist as I want to be.
