What It Can Be

It is what it is, but what can it be?

The saying, “It is what it is” has been popular in recent years. It’s often accompanied with a resigned shrug of the shoulders.

In my experience, the phrase is most often used to describe circumstances that can only be accepted, not changed.

Sure, there are always things outside of our control and some things we can’t change, but what if every time we said or heard, “It is what it is” we considered asking “What can it be?” instead. Just asking the question opens the door to creative problem solving.

Consider of all the innovations that have occurred when ‘it what it is’ circumstances were rejected. Disabled athletes competing in olympic events comes to mind as an example. Cures for incurables, or perhaps even the lessons learned from unfortunate events.

Changing what it is, to what it can be is a challenge worth considering.
