Paper versus Online

Recently I was asked how I keep myself organized. Ha! I am a left handed creative and my organizational systems make sense to myself only.

With my colleagues, I use the online office calendar because I am expected to. In truth, I like a hard-copy (yes, old fashioned), paper calendar/planner. Crammed with notes to myself, suggestions, ideas, reminders, doodles and scribbles, it is my thinking pad.

A google calendar organizes in its own pre-programmed way — very useful for sure, but additional notes and reminders are usually hidden unless you click on them. Not so with paper.

On-line systems with their bleeps and pop-up reminders have saved my day more than once. But in the same way that I use both a paper map and a GPS to navigate long distances, a balance between an online calendar and the thought provoking, hunch inducing, scribbled jumble of notes in a note book or planner can’t be replicated.

My pencil seems to be linked to my brain. I highly recommend — turn away from the screen, pick up your pencil. See what you think.
