The Joy of Concentrating

If I felt I was fully prepared, I have always enjoyed writing an exam. To me, exams were like solving puzzles, and I liked being totally absorbed in the process.

Researchers have proven again and again that multitasking is not possible.  Our brains are not capable of processing two bits of information at the same time.  We cannot receive a message (listen) and text at the same time.  Our brains are literally flipping back and forth between the two tasks, which in fact raises our stress levels and both tasks suffer.

Imagine chess masters pausing to send texts in the middle of a tournament…

Of course, a simple text does not need the same level of single minded focus as a final exam, but devoting your full attention to the task at hand, in my humble opinion, increases the level of enjoyment in completing said task. I will argue that even doing tasks such as dishes and housework are more enjoyable if you devote your full attention to them.

I will let you argue amongst yourselves about that one.

Next week, Chapter 10 arrives at its conclusion.  I will take a moment here to let all of you know that I will be signing off for an indefinite period of time.  As much as I have enjoyed this creative experiment, it leaves little time for other pursuits.  More on this decision next week.  For now, please accept my thanks for all the support you have given me over the years, and we’ll talk more next Sunday.

My brain and concentration was at full capacity creating this weeks post, at  Contentment is for Cows.
