Back to the Drawing Board

Starting the PageEvery once in a while you need to go back to the proverbial drawing board — meaning, re-evaluate your best laid plans.  Sometimes a business plan is not achieving the expected results, sometimes the team is under performing, sometimes Plan A has to be scrapped and Plan B put into action.  Or, there is a madness in your method that could be addressed…

I do not hide, (well, I can’t really), the fact that I am an amateur artist drawing my comic strip.  One of my consistent frustrations has been that I often like my pencil drawings better then the final ‘inked’ versions.  Very frustrating.  I also struggle with getting the size and shape of the head correct.

My trip back to the drawing board included a lovely art lesson from my friend and neighbour, Joanna Mozdzen.  As a sculptress, if anybody knows anything about the shape of the human head… well she’s the source.

Two things came out of our meeting –one– although they still won’t be perfect, it is now easier, with less angst involved for me to draw a character’s head.

And the second thing?  Why ink when pencil works?  …Right…  Why did I not consider such a simple and obvious solution?

Check your drawing board.  There might be an elegant solution lurking in a double check of your plans or methods.

With slight changes to my methodology, Scene One of Chapter Six, “A Brief History of Harold” has been uploaded to www.contentmentisforcows.com
