Improv Rules to Live By
In her 2011 autobiography ‘Bossypants’, Tina Fey wrote that the rules for creating an improvised skit in front of an audience would make great rules for living your life;
“Rule # 1. The Rule of Agreement; Agree with what your partner offers. Agree and say “YES”. That gives both parties a starting point. Of course, in life, there will be times when you have to disagree, but starting with agreement as a rule reminds you to, as Tina says, ‘at least start from an open-minded place’.
Rule # 2. Say “Yes, AND”; After you agree with your partner, say, ‘AND’. And contribute something of your own. Saying “Yes, AND”, means you are taking responsibility to move forward from the agreement you made in Rule number one…
Rule # 3. Make Statements. Making statements is an extension of Rule #2 — Contribute, don’t ask questions all the time — it puts pressure on your partner to come up with all the answers.
Rule # 4. THERE ARE NO MISTAKES, only opportunities. (This is the best rule.)
Start with a “YES, AND” and see where 2016 takes you.
