1937 Resolutions
2025 will be the year I finally see my mother’s diaries published. The following excerpt is one of my favourites, from Sunday January 3, 1937, when she was 20 years old. (Notes in italics are mine);
Last year I got 4 out of the five things I wanted, this year I got 5 out of the 8 things.
- I wanted to be in a play — I got that.
- I wanted a steady – which I have practically, Jack W. & Ken B.
- I wanted to go to the Humberside Dance — I didn’t get that.
- I wanted either Nora, or Jack or myself to get a job. Both Nora & Jack have jobs.
- I wanted to pass all my exams — I passed 7 out of 9.
- I wanted health – which I have certainly enjoyed this year especially compared to last year. My eyes haven’t bothered me since last June when I was writing exams. I am getting so that I have to take pills all the time but it is worth it.
- I wanted my skin to get cleared up and it has.
- I wanted to top the class in English lit. I believe I came 3rd so that isn’t bad.
Anyway I am very pleased with 1936 and I do hope 1937 will be just as splendid. These are the things I want for 1937;
- I want to go with somebody in the city who likes me and whom I like.
- I want to put on some weight.
- I want to get a job.
- I want Morley to get a job.
- Most of all I want Tiny Hill to go over with a big bang. It will mean so much to every one if it does – Elizabeth & Jack — Mother & Dad – Nana – Mr. Goodall and all us kids. It’s just got to go through! (Tiny Hill was a mining stock north of Timmins.)
- My disposition has improved a great deal in the past year – so Elizabeth says. This year I want it to improve still more. I want never to lose my temper, always to be cheerful & hide my real feelings, to always be willing to do things for other people in order to help them along. To work hard at school – even though I don’t like it, I want to pull myself up from the bottom of the class. (She was taking courses at a secretarial school.)
I had a very dull time New Year’s Eve. Marj & Ron, Edna & Cliff & Jack W. came over to our place about 9:30 p.m. and we played games with Elizabeth & dear brother Jack and ate. Then we went to the Runnymede and saw the stupidest picture. Then over to Marj’s to eat and so home. It was a very stupid evening and next year I am either going to get gloriously tight or else go to bed at 7 p.m. and sleep the New Year in.
The Xmas holidays are over but they have been very enjoyable. Unfortunately there was no snow & I couldn’t use my new ski suit and boots. Jim Milne was lovely to me all through the holidays. Last Monday night we sat on the sofa & listened to “Cavalcade” and talked till 1:15 am. I had a very enjoyable evening & Jim admitted he had too. I filed his nails for him & he filed mine. We acted very silly but we had a lot of fun.
…May we all have such simple dreams and wishes come true in 2025.
Keep your joy.
Anne Milne is an every Sunday blogger, unless it’s a holiday weekend. Or summertime. Facebook or sign up for delivery to your email.
I like how the Milne name shows up right at the end. Cosmic foreshortening, fershur. Can’t wait for the book to be published!
I like how she says she wants ‘a’ steady, names two, and then says what a nice time she had with Jim Milne.
Thank you,
A.
The foreshadowing at the end is perfect. At least I know she got one of her New Years wishes, even though I know she missed out on the “never lose my temper” one.
I wish I knew what the stupid movie was. So funny that I was also going to movies at the Runnymede when I was 20.

Yes, it is a spoiler alert…
You will enjoy her many references to Toronto landmarks. It’s like another character in the background. As for the movie, it is a break with her usual habit that she doesn’t say the title. Every other movie, she says what she went to see. I bet though, if we look up what was in theatres in Dec/Jan of 1936-7, we could figure it out. We know her taste, right?
