The Case of the Disappearing Post

The Case of the Disappearing Post

Most of us have had the experience of looking for something that we held in our hand a minute ago. Keys, glasses, pens, what have you — we put them down to do something else… We didn’t go far… We just had them! Where could they be?

We’ve all been there. It’s frustrating, but eventually we arrive at that moment when we say, “Oh, there it is. Silly me.”

But what if what’s lost is somewhere out in cyberspace? Last week I posted about my experience with my website hosting service. Through a miscommunicated instruction this entire blog, Contentment is for Cows, was deleted. All the posts, everything, gone off the internet. Disappeared. It took a few days, but they restored it last Sunday morning.

I posted a new blog as per usual and all went well. Readers liked and commented, the site was working normally. And then mysteriously, the new post disappeared. The rest of the site continued to function but my most recent post… Poof! Gone.

But I just saw it a minute ago!

How do you conduct a digital search? There are no couch cushions to cast aside. No bed to look under. My hosting site insists this was not their doing. WordPress has not been particularly helpful. I have no idea how to find the missing post, let alone retrieve it.

Which means that this post, the one you are reading right now, is essentially a test post. Will this disappear too? Was last week’s vanishing act a one time fluke? Did I hit a button I shouldn’t have? Has some weird breaker switch been activated?

And if I’ve been hacked, why would they only pick on the one post?

Who knows? Stay tuned.

Stay safe everyone.
