The Art of Handwriting

Bernices JournalCursive handwriting can be beautiful. Or it can be scrawled, messy and illegible.  To my mind, it does not matter.  I love to look at handwriting.  It is such a personal, individual stamp created by that one person who wrote it and no one else.  Any sample of handwriting is also a marker of time and place for the individual who wrote it.  Like art, it cannot ever be replicated exactly.

I have been transcribing my Mother’s diaries that she wrote when she was a young woman in the 1930’s.  The content of the diaries is a pleasure to read, but her handwriting also holds my attention.  It is a unique, distinctive messy mix of swirls and lines.  Any family member could recognize it at twenty paces I am sure.

Google ‘handwriting and the brain’ and you’ll find that there is all sorts of research about how the act of handwriting engages the brain…  It turns out that handwriting is actually good for us.   Somehow that does not surprise me.
