Schitt’s Creek. So Satisfying.

With apologies to Game of Thrones fans, I confess to losing interest in the series after four seasons. The story became too convoluted, too much gratuitous violence, too many favourite characters slaughtered and I just stopped caring. After such a strong start, it was disappointing.

The show Weeds had followed the same route for me. A strong start, good strong characters, and then… it went too far, and frankly, went on for too long. I stopped watching. There was no resolution to what had begun as an interesting problem for a recent widow to resolve. I don’t know if she ever got things together. Disappointing.

Frasier too was a great show early in it’s run. Great dialogue, and good characters but how many times could an audience be expected to watch Frasier and Niles resolve their sibling rivalry issues? I’m guessing at least three times a season. For eleven seasons. Need a calculator?

At first viewing I thought the show Schitt’s Creek was too exaggerated, too over-the-top. Not to mention that I found the annoying mayor, ‘Roland Schitt’, just too annoying to watch. And then somehow, I got hooked.

The writers broke the formula of standard sitcoms and allowed the characters to grow and develop as people. I found myself really caring about what was happening to each of them.

But what impressed me most about Schitt’s Creek was that the writers remained committed to their original story arc in spite of numerous offers to keep going for more seasons.

Like any well told story, Schitt’s Creek has a beginning, a middle and an end.

So satisfying.

Stay safe everyone.
