Other People’s Art
I had the opportunity this week to look close up at graphic artwork by Merle Tingley and other local artists at the Ting Festival at the Arts Project.
I know I shouldn’t compare. I know that in my head. But, I have to admit it was a little difficult not to.
Perhaps comparing is too strong a word. Admiration with a tinge of envy might be a better fit. The art that is being produced in the comics and graphic arts community is truly impressive. There is a tremendously broad range of styles and skill level.
And there is where I find my comfort… in the broad range of style. I know that what I am producing will fit in there somewhere. I started with the story –not the art. I can’t say for sure, but I think at least some of these other artists started with the art and the story came later.
Either way, it’s about giving yourself permission to create and contribute. And everybody is welcome to do that.
The Ting Festival continues into next week, check it out at http://www.artsproject.ca/
