On Taking Breaks

Photo is from wiki commons; wine, food and smiles. All terrific lunch time activities. 🙂

Every day I pack a really good lunch. In every office I’ve ever worked in I consistently win the ‘lunch of the day’ award.

The lunch itself is special yes, but really, it is taking a break away from my desk and the omnipresent screen that is important to me.

Once, a long while ago, I had a boss criticize me for taking my lunch away from my desk and in the company of (gasp) ‘the administration staff’. (In reality, he did not phrase it so politically correctly.)

This boss was — in my opinion, totally obtuse to the benefits that a break can provide. Even outside of work, taking a break from a task is not only refreshing but can have other advantages. Feeling stuck? Can’t figure out why your spreadsheet is not cooperating? Take a break. Forget about it.

Sometimes your brain needs to work without your mind being involved. Something as simple as a crossword answer has been obvious to me after taking a break.
