Why Worry?

Worrying. What’s the point? To stew about something that has happened or could possibly happen means to engage in an illogical activity.

Shakespeare said it best, “What is done is done and cannot be undone”. To worry about something that hasn’t yet occurred, or could possibly occur, well, logically, stewing and ruminating over a potential occurrence does not equal control over the future.

When there is no control over the situation, then let it go. Ha! Easier said than done, I know. I’ll use my brother as an example here. He once told me he never worried about his kids when they were out late. He could not know what they were up to, he could only trust them to call if they needed his help, and if there had been a car accident or something, then they were beyond his help anyway. So why worry?

In an old fashioned cookbook that once belonged to my long gone mother-in-law, there are quaint country ‘folkisms’ on the bottom of every page. My favourite has always been,

“Don’t tell me worrying doesn’t work. The things I worry about don’t happen.”

And there’s your answer to why worry.
