Why Do We Create?

CreatingWhy do people create things?  Why do we make music, paintings, gardens, woodturnings, and write novels and comics and blogs, and anything else you can think of?  Why are there petroglyphs, ancient cave drawings… why were clothes that were needed for survival decorated with beads?

Greater minds than mine have pondered this question.  The short answer is “Because we can”, but I think it goes beyond that.  The impetus to put the energy into creating something (anything) is, I believe, a basic part of our human nature.  It is not about survival.  It seems to be about the process.  Once the idea, the conception, the seed takes hold, therein lies the impetus  to bring the fill-in-the-blank creation into reality.

I can only speak for me, but when I sit back and look at something I have made (including a good tomato sauce…) there is a sense of satisfaction I can’t get from appreciating, or consuming someone else’s creation.  That sense, that satisfied feeling is, for me, the answer to why we create.  Comments?
