Lightfoot’s Power
I’ve never been caught out on Lake Superior when the gales of November came early but I think I understand the feeling of resigned doom thanks to Gordon Lightfoot’s brilliant storytelling.
And I can picture the backstair with a screen door and a sagging porch where a hard lovin’ woman has a man feeling mean.
I can’t speak for anyone else, but when I listen to a favourite pop song I don’t usually get a movie going in my mind. Perhaps a feeling is evoked, some images and memories come to mind — but every time I hear the opening words, ‘The legend lives on…’ I feel compelled to stop what I’m doing, listen to the whole story, and let the movie play out in my mind. The song becomes the soundtrack to my imagination as the tale unfolds and the ship goes down.
Lightfoot’s songwriting is testament to the power of a good story. He was not the best voice of his era, nor the best guitar player, but man… what stories.
Fella, it’s been good to know you.
Stay safe everyone.
Great post in honour of Lightfoot. His songs were all special because they told stories to which we could relate in some fashion.
Yes, he had that universal touch.
Thank you.
