Woodturning in Pittsburgh
As one collector told me, my sister is a ‘rock star’ in the world of woodturning. I recently accompanied her (www.marilyncampbell.ca) to Pittsburgh for the American Association of Woodturners (www.woodturner.org) annual symposium. If you attend this event you are either a turner, of any skill level, or a collector or a sister…
Over 1500 people attended the event. The intention of the association is to raise the appreciation of woodturning as an art form. The artists readily share their techniques with each other. There are demonstrations held so anybody, beginner or artisan, at any skill level can attend and learn.
Of the thousands of turned pieces entered in the show, some are selected for a formal, public critique by a panel of established turners, or people in the community who really know their stuff. The discussion started with the comment, “No one ever learned anything from a pat on the back.” And the critique comments were in line with that –not critical, but questioning what makes this particular turning such a great piece? What options or choices could the artist make so their next piece is even better?
We all could use some of that… What is it that makes my fill-in-the-blank ‘good’, and what choices or options can I try to make it even better the next time?
The conclusion to Chapter Three is posted, at www.contentmentisforcows.com
