Mid-Year Resolutions
Happy Half-Year!
We have reached the mid-year point of 2018. For those of us who make New Years Resolutions on January 1, those commitments made with grim determination, are either long forgotten or are now habits.
Me, I confess, I do not make New Year’s Resolutions. Not that I do not need to make improvements, but the typical resolutions relating to diet and exercise are not my challenges. I have good exercise habits, I eat properly, (thanks Mom), and I don’t smoke. I love all things alcoholic, from beer to bourbon, but no one would ever accuse me of drinking too much. And, as an adult, I have finally learned how to keep my room clean. (True confession.)
So why bother with resolutions?
As I look at the year so far, I am inspired to partake of resolutions with a twist. What if resolutions were about being good to oneself instead of insisting on new and improved habits? What if a resolution was to reward oneself and be grateful for all the lessons learned, all the good habits, all the kindnesses offered, all the extra miles done? What if?
My mid-year’s resolution is to do something for me once a month. I have a years-old gift certificate for a pedicure. Seriously, what has been the hold up here? I will begin my resolutions with booking that appointment. I have been saying for months that I need a massage. Book it.
And so on. Once a month, do something that is out of the ordinary, that is meant to be a reward, or a treat, just something I normally don’t get around to doing for myself. Half the fun will be thinking of things to do.
What do you think? Can we start a tradition of Mid-Years Resolutions to foster habitual kindness to oneself?
