On Smartness

One of the best lines to come out of The Simpson’s was Homer declaring, “I’m so smart.  S-M-R-T.”

What does it mean to be smart?  There are smart people who are well read, educated, articulate, with a broad range of knowledge and a brilliant memory.  You know, academic style smart.

There are others I admire whose smartness has nothing to do with books or education.  Their smartness stems from a confidance to tackle hands on physical problems — a MacGyver style fix anything ability.    As an example — my aged Father needed a door stop but he lacked the flexibility to maneuver a wedge with his foot.  His friend made him a door stop with a rod attached so he could place the stop with his hand.  Creative fix-it smart.

Others have ‘people’ smarts.  Within a short period of meeting someone they can identify what others (me) take longer to see. As an example, a friend of mine once pointed out that two couples at a party were ‘playing with fire’ and someone was going to get hurt.  I scoffed.  Don’t be ridiculous.  They are all good friends having fun.  …Sure enough, turns out there was an affair was going on (or started) and feelings were indeed hurt.  My friend’s observation skills were smarter than my own.  I accepted what I saw on a superficial level.  My friend saw what was going on under the banter between the couples.  People smart.

We are all smart in different ways, and likewise dull in others. Taken altogether, our individual combination of smarts and our S-M-R-T-S is what makes us unique.
