What You Don’t Know You Don’t Know

Pie ChartHumour me and draw a big circle in the air.  Now, imagine that this circle represents all the knowledge in the world.  All of it.

Now, imagine the circle is a pie chart.  A slice of that pie chart represents all the knowledge that you personally have.  This would include everything that ‘you know you know’… For example, you know you know how to read, speak english, walk.  Maybe you have some specialized knowledge like mathematics, science, athletics, cooking, knitting, whatever.

Now, in a portion of the rest of the pie chart are things that you ‘know you don’t know’.  For example, I know I don’t know how to speak Mandarin, or how to perform open heart surgery.  I know that this knowledge exists and I know I don’t know how to do it.

Bear with me here folks, I’m getting to it.

In the remaining part of the pie chart lies the knowledge that you ‘don’t know you don’t know’  …What?

We can only identify examples of what we didn’t know we didn’t know in hind sight.  Like, discovering penicillin.  We didn’t know mouldy bread could fight bacterias.

Sometimes we learn things about ourselves in this ‘don’t know what you don’t know’ section of the pie chart.  I recently gave a talk at MoMondays about learning how to draw.  Before I started this comic strip, I knew I did not know how to draw.  What I did ‘not know that I didn’t know’ was that I could create characters and write story lines.

I didn’t know that.  Now I do.

I know that the readers who enjoy this blog and comic strip the most are the readers that have signed up via email…

I know this week’s installment of Contentment is for Cows has been uploaded.

I know we have Facebook.  Twitter too.
