The Creative Fundraiser

waysI had the pleasure this past week of attending a fundraiser for WAYS, Western Ontario Youth Services.  It was a brilliant idea to copy the template of American Idol.  Ten different acts took the stage to showcase their talent, get feedback from the London celebrity judges, and be voted on by the audience.

It was great.

From young dance troops, to tap dancers, to beat boxers, to a ‘Gordon Lightfoot-esque’ singer songwriter, the variety and degree of talent was fun and entertaining.  And, oh, the young man who won the audience’s vote?  Spoken word poetry artist, Deemus recited an ode he had written to his grandfather… a man who could fix anything except his own liver cancer.  It was a moving performance that held the audience rapt.

We are all community.  Whether you support youth programs or send funds to help those in Fort McMurray, community is who we are.

My own performance continues with this week’s scene of “A Brief History of Harold” at Contentment is for Cows.
