You Are What You Create

Practicing drawing –my right hand inspired my left…

Or are you?

One of the most common responses I get from friends who read my comic is, “Is that you?”, or “Which one is you?”.  Yes, the inspiration for the comic characters was originally based on me and my sisters.  Notice my use of past tense.  It was originally.

Each character must come from some part of me — after all, it is me who makes all this stuff up.

Over time however,  each of the characters took on a life of their own.  Sure, Bella and Mimi might have been inspired by my sisters, but the characters as you are reading them are being true to themselves. I am not sure how this happened, but I am just going to go with it.

The scenes I like the best are the ones where I did not ‘interfere’ so to speak… or compare what the characters are doing to what would happen in ‘real life’.  The joy of creating this comic lies in the fact that it is not real.

So, are you what you create?  I think the answer is yes, what you create is an extension of yourself, but the line between what, or who, inspires you and what comes to exist on the page is definitely a blurred line.
